Summer is finally here! We have compiled five great locations where you can enjoy great weather, great adventures, and great food! Now it is time to pack up the family and head out for an amazing time!
Portland, Maine
Portland is known for having some of the best beaches in the New England states. Just remember that the water is a bit chilly even in August! All of the beaches offer breathtaking views. If you are looking to relax at the beach, then check out Crescent Beach State Park. It received its name because it is actually crescent-shaped and this helps to calm the waves. There are some great hiking trails at the park as well. For a more active beach scene, you may want to visit Old Orchard Beach. It offers 7 miles of beaches, as well as a pier filled with amusement rides and shops.
What about great food? The summer months have great options from land and sea in Portland. For starters, you can find blueberries, oysters, lobster rolls, beer, and ice cream. You may even be surprised at how many ways a lobster roll can be served up!
The State of Maine is home to more than 60 lighthouses, with many of them being easily accessible from the Portland area. While in Maine you need to visit at least one of the amazing lighthouses.
Camping near Portland helps get you to experience the culture and the people fully. There are several places to camp and still be close to all of the great advantages of a city.
2. Cannon Beach, Oregon
Cannon Beach is the best overall beach in Oregon! If you’re coming to Cannon Beach you cannot miss Haystack Rock, which is a protected marine and bird life sanctuary. This huge rock rises 235 feet just off the beach and is home to Tufted Puffins. Sitting on the beach with a campfire is a great way to watch an amazing sunset! This part of the Oregon Coast is full of starfish, anemones, and other sea creatures. The best way to see them is to visit the beach at low tide. Look down as you approach the water and you’ll see small pools filled with interesting animals.
Food on the West Coast consists of incredible seafood brought in daily during the summer months. You can enjoy Dungeness crab, salmon, marionberries, huckleberries, and hazelnuts. Tillamook ice cream and cheeses are also great Oregon treats.
Now that you are excited to visit, you can find some great camping options near the little town and the beautiful beach! The weather in the Pacific Northwest is amazing during the summer months, which makes the town of Cannon Beach a great getaway!
3. Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May is designated as a Historic District and National Landmark because of its number of Victorian buildings located in the town and surrounding area. It has the second-largest collection of Victorian houses in the country! You will see Victorian mansions, horse-drawn carriages, gas-lit cobblestone streets, and a famous lighthouse. Also known as America’s original seaside resort, with nice beaches, shopping, and many restaurants. There is something to do for everyone at Cape May.
The lighthouse was built in 1859. You can walk the 199 stairs to the top for a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. It is located at the Cape May Point State Park. There are some nature trails and a beach at the state park, but no swimming is allowed.
At the Jersey Shore, you will find a wide array of amazing seafood, including black sea bass, flounder, swordfish, tuna, whiting mackerel, cape shark, porgies, butterfish, scallops, clams, oysters, crabs, and lobster. A couple of great food options that were invented in New Jersey are the pork roll and saltwater taffy.

4. Cody, Wyoming
Cody, Wyoming, was named after Colonel William Frederick Cody, who is better known as Buffalo Bill. Founded in 1896, the town of Cody began with Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show which made him the most famous man in the world at that time. When we think of Cody we get images of the Wild West when this area was unexplored and still a wilderness.
A great way to get the full experience of the Wild West is to see the Cody Nite Rodeo. You can enjoy watching as cowboys and cowgirls compete in events like bull riding, barrel racing, and calf roping. It’s a chance to see a real-life rodeo in action. If you love history, explore the town and its 27 historic buildings, which includes school rooms, general stores, and even Butch Cassidy’s hideout. The Old Trail Town & Museum of the West is designed to make you feel like you are taking a step back in time.
The top food choices in Cody are rack of lamb, steak, trout, brisket, and chokecherry jam. French onion soup is also a well-loved food item in the area. There are many cattle ranches in the area, so you can imagine all of the beef food choices available!
Finding a great campground in the area is easy! There are so many great choices depending on how close to nature you want to be. Enjoying the peace, as well as the wide open skies is one of the reasons it is so great to camp near Cody.
5. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Pigeon Forge is a quaint little town tucked away in the Smokey Mountains. The area is known for being one of the top-visited locations in the country. Pigeon Forge is an all-American town with a wholesome atmosphere and good ole Southern hospitality. Exploring this town will create a desire to return again and again! From family-friendly entertainment to outdoor adventures and cultural experiences, there's something for everyone to enjoy in this mountain town.
One of the most exciting places to visit in Pigeon Forge is Dollywood! It is owned by Dolly Parton and was once Silver Dollar City. The amusement park is designed with a sense of backcountry culture and adventure. The one place that you must stop at while in the park is the Grist Mill and eat the cinnamon bread! The town of Pigeon Forge is also home to many dinner shows. It is a great way to eat a good meal and get entertained at the same time.
Talking about great food, Pigeon Forge is known for some great food. You will find great fried catfish, hushpuppies, biscuits and sawmill gravy, apple butter, apple dumplings, and grits to name just a few. You will not be disappointed and you will not leave hungry!
Camping in or near Pigeon Forge is a great option. There is also a local trolley that you can take along the strip and to Dollywood for added convenience! Staying in a great tourist location during the summer months is something that will create memories that you will cherish!
